Another day, another version!

"Life Changes", continues to do so!!  After the layers from yesterday dried, this is what I have.  The face is pretty much gone.  I do strive to keep it as abstract as possible.  Someone always sees something in it, but that's okay, as long as it's not distracting to the painting..  The face not only distracted me, but it was looking out, away from the painting, which would make the viewer's eye travel off the canvas.  I have managed to give myself another problem, the new line is awfully strong and is chopping up the canvas.  So I layered on more paint this morning.  I'm still waiting for it to dry.  This pouring is a lengthy process with so many translucent layers!

I'm looking for the composition to have some push and pull.  You should be able to delve into the painting, have somewhere to travel in and also, things of interest to carry you back out.  Your eye needs to travel the canvas and not get stuck anywhere.  These are just a few of the things that I am striving for as I work on my paintings.  Colors of course add a certain personality that conveys a feeling of emotion or peace.  The angles at which the shapes come together gives a surface tension that can make it vibrate or soothe the troubled soul.

Today I am also looking at transportation of paintings to and from their destinations.   Boxes, padding, all the essentials must be ordered and ready to go.  There is a lot to pulling a show together.  Currently I have a dozen paintings that work well together, but a couple hundred that are still possibilities! There is an old saying, the first 300 paintings are just practice!!  Maybe it all is practice as we constantly strive to improve.  In art, I tend to be a perfectionist!  Happy Tuesday all!

Reworking "Life Changes"

When I could photograph the painting vertically, I was bothered by the strong hot area on the upper right.  In fact, I can see a face... I don't like that!  So, more layers have been poured this morning.  I really enjoy the process so much, but sometimes I wonder if it will come together, will I over work it...  there are so many decisions to make when making art....  I will post the next layers when they are dry enough to take a photo.

It's a Monday morning, a good day to be sure the hours are kept in the studio.  I like to do at least 5 - 6 hours, but many days are much longer.  That's okay since it means that I working.  I am a believer that any work in the studio leads to more work in the studio.  It is part of life and can't be pushed to the back burner.  When I run out of room to paint in the studio, I paint in the kitchen, breakfast room etc. The more ideas that I am working on, the more ideas that come to my mind...

Obviously, I am also trying to be better about the blogging and website updates.  It's a good way to share and to get my thoughts together about the direction of my work.

Happy Monday all!!  Here it's raining, but the sun is out.  I have heard on days like the the devil gets his due.. (-;

A Notable Day

Today is both Father's Day and my father's birthday. Both my father and my husband, the father of my children, are gone and have been for years, so this day is full of memories and some sadness. So it's a good day to paint as all days tend to be.
I am working on a painting, actually I am painting over one that has never made me happy. It is called "Life Changes". Originally it looked like this:

Picture
It seemed too stiff to me, so I have been adding layers, always my best solution... and although it's still a bit wet, I can show you a portion of it.  It's hard to photograph well flat on a table...

The turquoise spot in the middle is still wet, so we are waiting on the latest layer to dry.  It has changed substantially!  It may need more work, but it's hard to tell at the moment.
So, that's what I'm up to today, what about you?  Creativity flowing?

    Sue moved to Lucas, TX in 2019, after may years in Houston. Burke Studio continues, just a new location!! She was born in Michigan, but has lived in many states since.  In Texas there is a saying, I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could!  It has become home in every way.    Houston has such a vibrant art scene, it's a great place to be for an artist! There are always art shows to see as well as fellow artists to share with and I am fortunate to have family nearby.
